The Video games Live orchestra and choir perform the theme from “Civilization IV” in this excerpt from the new “Video Games Live” PBS special. Ge Jin, PhD candidate in Communication at UCSD, is researching areas of the computer gaming culture in China, real money trade in online games and documentary filmmaking. In China, a new kind of factory hires people to play online games like World of Warcraft and Lineage and produce in-game currency, equipment, high-level characters and other virtual goods. Affluent gamers from Korea, Europe and America pay real money for these virtual goods to quickly raise their status in games. Jin’s research takes a close look at how these factories, commonly known as “gold farms”, organize the production and distribution of virtual goods.

While this may come as a shock, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about how to best use my time. This whole series was based on the idea of finding the right game to spend my valuable time on, and what I ultimately found was that my true passions are pulling me away from online games. Thus, I’ve decided to end “Questing.” But before I go onto better things, I put together one last grand finale covering a whole list of games I never got around to.
