The series has been described as an epic space opera, which completely hits the nail on the head when anyone tries to explain the gameplay behind Mass Effect. The games see you command a ship around the galaxy, finding strange new worlds to explore and recruit weird and wonderful aliens into your crew. The characters you recruit are the ones you end up being able to control in fights, and the varying abilities are just one of the aspect to explore.

The original Mass Effect had the player controlling commander Shepherd, along with their trusty crew, into a fight with an alien race of intelligent machines. There’s no reason to spoil the plot, but the Reapers play a big part in the game, and the third title sees their return to the series as the doom bringers of the galaxy. The poor Milky Way is being terrorised by these beings, and it’s down to Shepherd to get out there and rally an army large enough to destroy them all.

Mass Effect 2 gave more in terms of gameplay aspects to explore, and it was a real hit when the PS3 release recently launched. Mass Effect 2 improved on the gameplay of the series, and that improvement has stuck with the games into the third entry. Simple commands were mapped to buttons and the entire concept of the epic RPG was changed. Instead of spending a whole day setting tactics, players simply made them up as they went along. One button press can have your squad eliminating all of your enemies without you needing to fire a shot.

Mass Effect 3 brings more to the table than just a conclusion to the epic story line of commander shepherd though. Multiplayer has been confirmed for both competitive and co-operative modes. This is the first time you can bring a friend into the fight for the universe with you, and the first time you get to take on other players in the Mass Effect universe. All of those tactics are going to be incredibly helpful when it comes to flanking a particularly tricky foe, and all of the amazing weapons players love will provide hours of endless entertainment.
