Can the ps2 players play the ps3 players in online gaming?

I was just wondering since i have a ps2 and my friends have a ps3 and since the sports titles like madden n nba have online gaming on ps2 and ps3 whether i would be able to play my friends through my ps2 and play against them who would be playing their ps3?
Of course you can’t PS3 versions are usually a bit different from the PS2. That’s just like saying can I play people on LittleBigPlanet on the PSP version with people online with playing on the PS3 version.
Plus the network for PS2 and PS3 are different.
