Marking the start of summer fun, the Beach to Chowder Run and Walk will take place on the Long Beach Peninsula, Washington, on Saturday, June 22. With a chip-timed course mapped out on hard-pack sand, the relaxed 5K run/walk and the invigorating 10K run promise a great time as well as sweeping Pacific Ocean views and cooling breezes. All finishers will receive a medal and be greeted with a steaming bowl of clam chowder.

Walking or running solo on the beach is always exhilarating, said Jeff Harrell, event organizer. Sharing the beach at Beach to Chowder with the hundreds of other people makes the experience unforgettable.

Chowder Run awards will be given to those finishing in the top three places for women and men in each of eight age divisions. Trophies will be given to the top overall male and female finishers. All ages and levels of ability are welcome to participate.

The Chowder Feed and Awards Ceremony will take place at 12:30PM in Long Beach with food, music and fun for all. The 10k races will begin at 9AM and the 5k race at 9:15AM. Hemlock Grove’s Kaniehtiio Horn joined in on AfterBuzz TV’s Hemlock Grove aftershow discussion Tuesday night. In her interview, Horn talks about swallowing fake worms, going topless and why she doesn’t want to be on a crime show.

Horn on what attracted her to Hemlock Grove:

I think [Hemlock Grove] is kind of what every actor would love to do. I sort of always known that I don’t really want to do for the rest of my life, which no offense, but there are some people who make an amazing living doing, not to sh*t talk CSI, but formulaic kind of shows. I don’t know if I’m able to play a cop for the rest of my life. When I get auditions for playing a gypsy prostitute witch on this new platform like Netflix. It felt like I need to do this now.

Horn on the Auditioning process:

I did my first audition…all I got were two scenes. The first two scenes you see me in, those were the audition scenes that I had. You try to gather as much as you can from that. I looked up gypsies as much as I could. I’m already super into Goran Bregovi… this composer from Serbia. I’m really into him. He plays awesome gypsy music…You have to make strong choices when you go in [to audition]. I made some choices. I worked on it a lot. I skyped with my [acting] coach one or two times. Then I found out I got a callback and my manager was like ‘You should read the book before you go in there.’ I actually had 10 days before the callback. The other girl who was in there, there were only 2 of us in the waiting room. The other girl was so incredibly different from me. She was a foot shorter than me, a lot darker complexion, and the way were were dressed was so different. I wore this red, off-the-shoulder shirt and a pair of jeans, and I took of my shoes. In front of Eli Roth, the writer, casting director, I walked in in my flip-flops and I was like ‘Do you mind if I just take off my shoes?’ and they were like Okay, yeah sure, get comfortable.’

Horn on Swallowing Fake Worms:

I got a call during shooting and the [producers] were like, ‘They need you to go in to test a worm.’ My agent didn’t really understand what was going on. They picked me up and drove me all the way to the studio, the studio with all the special effects guys. They had this jelly worm-thing that they really spent a lot of time making. They were like, ‘We really want you to swallow this thing whole, like a pill’ and I’m like ‘I’m not allowed to chew this gigantic thing here?’ and they’re like, ‘They really would like it if you just swallowed it whole.’ I’m like, ‘Okay, but does anybody know the Heimlich maneuver, because I don’t think I can get this down.’…The special effects guys were holding their camera phones facing me. All 5 guys and the driver around me watching. I gagged the first time it went down and I had to spit it all into the garbage. I was like ‘I’m sorry guys. I’m sorry- I can’t do it. You really have to make it smaller.’

Horn on Appearing Topless on Netflix:

I’m from a reserve. A reservation. So I know everybody. Everybody knows me. I think being topless on a national television show I kind of don’t really- [laughter] My friend’s looking at me because she didn’t finish the series and she’s like You go topless? [laughter]- anyways- I think the topless thing because I have done it before and I really, really try to choose carefully if I do end up doing that on a production. I thought it was done tastefully on this. I’m happy with how it turned out. I don’t really care, nationally. It’s when I have my neighbor, or people in my town go Heeey, I saw episode blah blah blah’ and I’m like Oh my god, yes, you did. I think it’s more when people I know who saw me that freaks me out from people I don’t know.

Horn on working with Mickey Rourke:

[Working with Mickey Rourke] was pretty interesting. It was fun. He came in there and shot his stuff. He improvised a lot. So I was like ‘Alright, alright, okay Mickey. I can keep up with you. I got this.’

Horn on the Vibe of the Hemlock Grove Set:

Even though Hemlock Grove was a serious, supernatural mystery, it was pretty fun on set. It was a light mood.

Horn on if she thinks Hemlock Grove will open the doors for her career:

I frickin’ hope so. [Hemlock Grove] and Defiance are the first American things that I’ve had. I’m so lucky that they’re true amazing characters…I’m not the lead or anything, but I hope I’m memorable.

Horn on Being on SyFy’s Defiance and Hemlock Grove:

It was so crazy, lucky that Defiance and Hemlock Grove was shooting in Toronto at the same time. I got to be on both of them. I got two great characters on both of them. I was really really lucky.

I’m hoping both [Hemlock Grove & Defiance] get picked up for a second season.
